About This Item

London: Faber & Faber, 1931. Criterion Miscellany, No. 26. Yellow wraps with red lettering. 1st trade edition preceded by a limited edition specially printed on different paper. Our copy: the wraps are in poor condition (soiled, torn, detached from the text pages) but the text pages themselves are in fine condition and fully intact. 36 numbered pages. The jacket describes this work as "an episode, complete in itself, from Mr. Joyce's much discussed Work in Progress." It is gloriously incomprehensible and is, of course, from a draft of Finnegan's Wake. A fan of Joyce's work, Herbert Matthews, wrote in the New York Times (1931) that "after an honest and patient effort, backed by a previous reading of all of Mr. Joyce's work, 'Haveth Childers Everywhere' still remained absolutely incomprehensible." A passable copy, reasonably priced, for the Joyce fan. . 1st trade edition.
