About This Item

New York: Viking. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1959. Third Printing. Hardcover. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 246 pages; 1959 Viking Press. HC/DJ. 3rd printing, before publication. Because of strong pre-ordering from the retail trade, the publisher had to reprint the book prior to the actual publication date. Soundly bound and clean in original wrap around pictorial dust jacket with publisher's $3.95 issue price intact to unclipped front flap. Prior owner name penned to front flyleaf. Cloth very slightly blanched and a little crimped at spine ends. Dust jacket lightly shelf rubbed with a few mild stresses at edges; a few tiny nicks at crown of the spine panel and light general toning. Jacket has 2 old small tape mends to reverse, blank surface at edges of the rear flap fold. Jackson's classic is uncommon in early dust jacketed copies. VG/VG .

Synopsis

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is widely considered one of the best literary ghost stories published during the twentieth century. The novel has been adapted to film twice — in 1963 and again in 1999 — both times under the title The Haunting . The Gothic tale tells the story of socially repressed Eleanor Vance and three others who head to Hill House to partake in an experiment involving paranormal activities.
