Publisher's embossed cloth with title in gold on the spine; spine is sunned; light wear to the extremities including some notable fraying at the top corner of the back board; small closed tears at the spine ends; binding has a backwards lean; contemporary owner name on the front free endpaper else a clean copy with only light and very occasional foxing. Cummins's first novel, Lamplighter enjoyed commercial success as well as Nathanial Hawthorne's derision. Haunted Hearts was Cummins's fourth and final novel before her untimely death in 1866. "A new edition in 1988 of The Lamplighter demonstrates this novel's durability. Even though the other three texts failed to match the commercial impact of her debut, Maria Cummins's importance as the author of an archetypal American romance remains secure" American National Biography.
