Description:
London: Jonah Bowyer, 1717 A good copy of the first English edition (published one year after the French 1st publication) with 37 fine engraved plates, maps and charts as called for. Frezier was a French royal military engineer, and was asked to undertake a voyage to Spanish possessions in South America to study fortifications and to chart the western coast. The first section covers his voyage from France round Cape Horn and the second gives detail of his voyage along the coast of Chile and Peru. His observations were valuable and he gives interesting accounts of local people and customs. Of interest now (particularly for those with golfing and strawberry eating interests) are his depictions of a sport that looks like golf and his discovery of strawberries which he introduced to France. Frezier made some geographical errors which Halley (of comet fame) corrects in this edition.
In contemporary panelled calf which has been expertly rebacked to provide a newer spine with raised bands and title label.… Read More

London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans & Roberts, 1857-1858., 1857. First British printings. 8vos. Variously paginated. Illustrated. Bound in 3/4 calf with marbled papers over boards. Complete with 60 lithographed plates and 15 folding maps plus extensive woodcuts. The first 3 volumes were printed in 1857 and the last two in 1858. All are first editions bound uniformly as best the binder could, as the printer marbled the edges in 1857 but didn't in 1858, or publisher used a different printer which may explain tissue guards in volumes 4 and 5 and not in the first 3. Edges on volume 4 and 5 are plain. Small stain to corner of frontispiece in volume 2 not affecting the image. A tight, very good plus or better set.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. In addition to the four title vignettes, we have: Europe (1844). 364 pages, 49 plates; Asie (1845). 592 pages, 82 plates; L'Afrique et l'Amérique (1844), 368 pages, 43 plates; l'Océanie (1845) 368 pages… Read More

After serving briefly in the Continental army during the American Revolution, Delano began a lifelong career as sailor, ship captain, and occasional shipbuilder, often in conjunction with his brother Samuel.
Delano gave significant space to an account of his capture of the Spanish ship Tryal off the coast of Chile in 1801 and to the events subsequent to the capture. Seeing the ship in apparent difficulty, Delano went aboard, was told that the ship was long without provisions, remained on board while a boat went for food and water, and learned that the slaves had revolted and captured the ship only when its captain, Benito Cereno, jumped into his boat as… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
