About This Item
Montreal & Kingston: McGill-Queen's University Press, 1992. 8vo. Red cloth covered boards. 168 pp. including index. Book in fine condition/Jacket also fine.. In 1904, Brooks left Canada to work as a tutor in physics at Barnard College in New York City. It was not easy for a woman graduate in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century to find employment, especially in Canada. Even after she had secured a position at Barnard, she had to fight to establish her right to continue as a member of the faculty. The authors follow Brooks across the Atlantic, where she travelled to Italy with Maxim Gorky and his entourage, and on to Paris, where she worked for a short while with Marie Curie.
