About This Item

Johnson, James Weldon. Negro Americans, What Now? New York: The Viking Press, 1934. First edition. Original bright red hardcover cloth boards. 103 pages. 7.5" x 5" inches. Paper label pasted down on spine. James Weldon Johnson was a prolific American author, Harlem Renaissance figure, NAACP leader, diplomat to Venezuela, and the first African-American professor to be hired at New York University. This book is a longform essay that assesses the conditions that black people in America live under, as well as their opportunities for advancement, through education, politics, and the development of the black Church as an institution. Ends with the riveting quote: "I will not allow one prejudiced person or one million or one hundred million to blight my life. I will not let prejudice or any of its attendant humiliations and injustices bear me to down to spiritual defeat. My inner life is mine, and I shall defend and maintain its integrity against all the powers of hell." Some minor scuffing to boards, spine bumped, and some foxing and toning throughout text, but overall this book is in very good condition.
