Hardcover, brown cloth boards, blindstamped with designs of stars and triple crescent moons. Exterior cloth is still shiny but there is edge and corner bumps/wear. Internal binding is good, no serious hinge issues though the front hinge is just starting to show small hairline cracks. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, nothing torn or loose. The only evidence of handwriting is on the front end page where you can see old dealer info pricing that was written in pencil and then later erased. Pages are toned due to age and there are a few smudge marks and spotting scattered about. First edition thus with a single date of May 1909 appearing on the copyright page.

Demetra Vaka Brown (1877-1946), born a Greek in Constantinople in the waning days of the Ottoman Empire, became an American journalist and novelist, returned to Turkey and wrote this book on Harem life just as the institution was ending.
