About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. The Harbor of Doubt is an adventure novel by Frank Williams first published more than 100 years ago, in 1915, but the story is just as exciting for today?s readers as it was for readers in the previous century.

The story-telling master that readers may know from The Wilderness Trail has created another great adventure book with this novel of his. The protagonist, a young ship captain named Code Schofield loses his ship in a gale on the Atlantic just off the shores of New Brunswick and the inhabitants of the island he lands on become suspicious of the circumstances that led to the loss. As doubt casts its head, young Code has to deal with the changed behavior of his friends as well as with the investigators sent by the insurance company. All is revealed in the end, but the question whether the young man will be able to put the events behind him still lingers on ? the title of the last chapter is Peace and Prosperity, but it is still a question whether that will apply to Code?s life, too.

The story is excellent not only because the events, the actual physical ones and the emotional ones, too, come in rapid succession, keeping up the reader?s attention all the way, but also because the reactions of the locals to the events as well as the way the protagonist processes his own emotions makes it all very convincing and human. The gale and the other forces of nature that influence the life of humans living on the small island are also depicted in a very suggestive and impressive manner, adding even more excitement to the story. The novel is not very long and it is excellently plotted and worded, providing an excellent read for cold evenings ? it is such a great story that you will probably want to read it all in one go.
