New York/Chicago/San Francisco: Rand McNally & Company, 1936. First Thus . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Winter, Milo. One of a lovely collection of classic children's books issued in the early-mid-20th century, each illustrated by a famous artist of the day. The hardcover books are cloth-bound, with a colored paper pastedown to the front board. Inside is a color frontispiece & 4 full-page color illustrations by Milo Winter (1888-1956) throughout the 352 pages of text. Smaller B&W illustrations open each chapter. This book is a FIRST EDITION, First Printing from 1936 in this format with the Winter illustrations (First, Thus). Condition is solidly Good: generally clean, binding secure, but slightly shaken. Pages off-white, noticeably tanned around all edges. Light soil/darkening to outside edges. Former owner's name & address in pen on verso of ffep; NO other writing/underlining/highlighting; NOT ex-lib. OTHER FLAWS: edges heavily worn, down to underlying boards. Very heavy fraying/rubbing at both ends of spine. Color plate following pg 48 has a very large tear, as does the following page, which is torn completely loose.Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! What a wonderful story of a close knit family whose honesty, hard work, loyalty, and selflessness is ultimately rewarded while undergoing hardships of poverty, and sickness. You have to admire Hans, who first would have given up his opportunity to acquire a pair of steel ice skates so his sister Gretel could have a pair of her own, and later gives up his chance to compete in the big skating contest so his loyal friend Peter could compete. And of course you must fall in love with Gretel who really has a heart of gold and goes on to win the Silver Skates. It's a shame no movie, even the fine Disney version, didn't follow exactly the story line by Mary Mapes Dodge. This book truly belongs in every household.
