Inscribed by the author to the former Dean of Agriculture at NMSU on the half title page. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Very Good +; slight shelfwear to board edges; several splash stains on the textblock fore edge; light dust soiling to textblock top edge. DJ: Very Good + ; Price Clipped; small moisture stain on the tail of the DJ spine. Yellow cloth boards and spine with red and brown lettering and decorations on the spine. Tinted textblock top. Clean internals. Interior hinges are sound and not split. 244 pp 8vo. This is the author's fifth book which takes place in Mexico in the 16th century. 30 Chinese ink drawings by the author illustrate the book. This is a beautifully written novel of life on a great Spanish hacienda (Acuichal) in Northern Mexico. It is a story of strong men and strong horses told with restraint and power. The “Hands of Cantu” refers to hands of Don Vito Cantu, the finest horseman in New Spain, into whose hands is put custody of a young Toribio de Ibarra who Cantu turns into one of the finest horsemen in Mexico. Together they make a journey into the Southwest in search of Indians with Spanish horses and of the "true Quivera". A clean presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
