About This Item

[New York]: Little Theatre, [nd but November 1963].. Single octavo sheet, printed recto and verso; single quarto sheet, printed on recto only. Fine. A handbill associated with the New York premiere performance of Langston Hughes' 1956 gospel musical. In spite of generally good reviews, it ran only 24 performances at the Little Theatre during the month of November 1963. Directed by Nikos Psacharopoulos, music by Jobe Huntley, the estimable cast included Clara Ward, Robert Guillaume, Louis Gossett, Micki Grant, Rosalie King, Theresa Merritt Hines, and others. Hughes wrote the play prior to his adaptation of it into a novel; the cutline on this handbill reverses that order. The lyric sheet corresponds to Act II, and was no doubt prepared to be distributed to audience members so they could "Sing and clap along to the Tambourine Chorus."
