About This Item

N.Y.: By the author no date (c 1935). Good. 1935. Hardcover. 13 pieces of 14" x 11" chip board; bound with metal rings through two hole punch; forming front and back covers, 9 boards with 9.25" x 7.5" high quality portraits laid down on one side. Prints all have photographer's signature last name lower left front corner - appears to be Beulman. After the first two portraits, 2 boards of lighter thickness, were glued together at one time with holograph name and address on one side: BETTY KASHMAN 2200 MORRIS AVE; BRONX N.Y.C; TEL: SEDGWICK 3.5882, and the word 'Over' to indicate verso which has reproductions of ads and periodical reviews, Variety, Daily Mirror, del Monico's, etc. All of these mention or feature Betty Kashman, and once Betty Cashman, often as a comedienne. The two boards are now separated, with glue remnants around the edges of back sides. Brown tape reinforcement front cover; both covers pulled from the rings; corners and leading edges of boards with chips and some rubbing. "Betty Cashman, an acting coach and public speaking teacher who worked with stars of the stage, screen and political arena, died in New York City Aug. 15, at the age of 90, according to friends. The New York native's students included Tony Curtis, the Gabor sisters, Jack Palance, New York City Mayor John Lindsay, Nancy Sinatra, Gene Shalit, CIA director William Casey and more, according to obituary information published by family and colleagues.Ms. Cashman was a drama coach, author, actress and director over the years. In 1947, she founded the Betty Cashman Drama Studios. Her books include "Betty Cashman and you in Personality, Acting and Public Speaking" (1950), "Successful Self-Expression Course" (1954) and "Thoughts for Actors and You" (1958).As an actress, she made her stage debut at four in Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch for the Poughkeepsie Players, and her New York City debut was in Honor Code at the Vanderbilt Theatre in 1931, followed by Moon Over Mulberry Street at the Lyceum Theatre in 1935. For the Professional Players Guild, she appeared in Preferred and The Torch-Bearers. For the Mansfield Players, she toured in The Merchant of Venice (as Portia) and The Taming of the Shrew (as Katharine), 1940 42" [from Playbill online bio]. One of the reproductions on the ad page shows a review: Lyceum Gives Play on Mulberry Street . . ."as Giovanna Bacolini, Betty Kashman does not so much as try. But she is a natural born comic and sings 'Moon Over Mulberry Street' as it should be sung." So we seem to have her unique portfolio made at the time of her early career when as Leonard Lyons remarks in another of the reviews reproduced here, "Betty Kashman has harbored an ambition to become another Sarah Bernhardt. .
