Good copy of Volume 2 (of 2) only of this popular 19th century German herbal
The attractive hand-coloured engravings by F. Kirchner. The subjects in this volume are fruits, spices, herbs, hallucinogenics, poisons, cereals, bulbs, ferns, mushrooms, etc. Plant names in German and Latin in the plate.
Artus's handbook of general medicinal-pharmaceutical plants was published in two volumes from 1846 to 1885.
With title page to the 5th edition of 1876, 395 pages of text (p.363 to p.758) and 110 hand-coloured botanical engravings.
Willibald Artus (1809-1880) was a pharmacist in Weimar, before moving to Jena in 1840 to become professor of chemistry and pharmacy at the university.
Brown half leather binding with crack at front hinge, gilt title on spine, marble boards scuffed and worn, text pages starting to brown as usual, hand-coloured plates with some toning and occasional foxing. A few pages starting to come loose from the binding, some chipped at the edges.
