London: John C. Nimmo, 1897. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9.5" by 7". Herbert Railton. A well illustrated first edition of this work on Hampton Court. In the original publisher's blue cloth binding, with gilt emblems to the front board depicting Wolsey's Coat of Arms. This historical work was written by British historian and priest, who was best known for his writings and reviews on the Church in Britain. This particular work explores the history of Hampton Court, from the buildings and their makers to the literature and gossip surrounding it. Illustrated with forty-three drawings by English artist, Herbert Railton, who was a leading illustrator of books and magazines at the time, known for his black-and-white drawings. Collated, complete.Ink inscription to the front endpaper, of 'Mrs Wynter Blyth, 1st Prize "Belmont", May 7. 1897'. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding, with gilt detailing to the front board. Externally, smart, with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine. The occasional mark to boards, with two larger marks to the front board. Front hinge slightly strained but holding firm. Ink inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the occasional page left unopened. Very Good
