About This Item
This is a first edition thus copy of this rare Natural History volume, which was published by James Nisbet & Co. in 1899. It is illustrated with black and white plates and in-line illustrations throughout.
The book is in Fair to Good condition overall. Red cloth hardboards, with black and gilt illustrations to front board and spine. Spine leaning quite heavily, and about ten pages torn widthways (as pictured), though all complete. Some pages creased and dog-eared, with spotting and slight foxing throughout. Tanning to endpapers, and ownership inscription to prelims. Pulling at pages 16 and 144, but binding remains generally firm. Pages clean and crisp, with just some occasional thumbing. Bumped to page edges and to top and tail of spine. Darkening to top page edges, and small stains to rear board. Board corners ripped. 19cm x 13.5cm. 340 pages + 16pp adverts. This volume was intended for young readers, forming part of a series of late Victorian informative manuals aimed at the improvement of the student and the dissemination of information to the young and curious.
