Brown lettering on spine and fronts of illustrated brown cloth - covered boards. Top edge gold gilt on both volumes. 51 illustrations including frontispieces. With index.

Moderate scuffing, soiling and wear to both volumes. Sunning to spines, a few nudged corners. Binding cloth is torn and frayed. Top gilt edges are scratched and scurffed. Foxing to endpapers. Pages untrimmed. Vol. I wear - Bumped lower corner worn through to cardboard; hinges started on both front and back. Vol. II wear - spine cloth is torn, showing an illustrated spine underneath with the letters TLL and painting of a young man from that era. Additional postage may be required. These are the stories of the highwaymen who robbed and murdered the travellers of a bygone age -- who preyed upon the weary souls who sought rest in the old inns of England. Stories now told for the first time since Captain Alexander Smith and Captain Charles Johnson collated the numerous chap-books and "last dying speeches and confessions" of those and earlier ages.
