From the Estate of Barbara Walters. Frontispiece and 9 colored plates. Black cloth spine, batik paper boards, gilt lettering. Minor offsetting to plates, else a fine copy with a dust-jacket. First large paper and first illustrated edition, one of 775 copies signed by O'Neill. "A classic expressionist masterpiece by Nobel prize-winner Eugene O'Neill, The Hairy Ape tells the story of Yank. a labourer who revels in his status as the strongest stoker on a transatlantic ocean liner. But when Yank is called a filthy beast by the overbred daughter of a steel merchant, he experiences an awakening of consciousness that leads him on a journey through the wealthy neighbourhoods and disenfranchised underbelly of New York society." (The Old Vic). copy, signed by the Signed, Limited Edition. Of the entire signed, limited edition of 775 numbered copies, 750 copies were for sale with the remaining 25 copies for presentation. This is copy is one of those 25 copies and is designated "Presentation Copy" in lieu of being numbered. Scarce, Atkinson notes no presentation copies in his bibliography other than the author's own copy. Quarto: cloth & patterned boards in dust jacket. Near fine except wear d/j.
