About This Item

Boston:: Little Brown,, (2005.). Hardcover first edition -. Near fine in a fine dust jacket (remainder mark). First printing. The author's very highly praised first novel, the story of a man who has remained silent for 30 years, after suffering a severe blow to the head while he was in the Army. When he takes on the responsiblity for the 9 year old son of a friend, the ability to communicate takes on a new urgency and he is forced out of the groove he has created for himself. Dustjacket praise from Frederick Busch, Richard Russo (who calls this novel 'wonderfully accomplished and achingly full of heart') and others.

Synopsis

Howard Kapostash has not spoken in thirty years. The small repertory of gestures and simple sounds that he uses to communicate lead most people to assume he is disturbed. No one understands that Howard is still the same man he was before his tragic injury. But when he agrees to help an old girlfriend by opening his home to her nine-year-old son, the presence of this nervous, resourceful boy in his life transforms Howard utterly. He is afforded a rare glimpse of life outside his shell ? with all its exuberant joys and crushing sorrows.
