Paris: Imprimerie Royale,. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1642. First Edition. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; (Biblica) (Mazarin edition). 1 Vol. (New Testament in Greek). (Paris: Imprimerie Royal, 1642). Folio. 440mm x 285mm. [4], 453, [1], 11 pounds.. Engraved title by Claude Mellan depicting an angel writing on an obelisk, the title itself inscribed on a scroll carried by three cherubs, imprint in Greek at foot,. Appeared under the auspices of the great Cardinal" (Darlow & Moule) ; the first edition of the Greek New Testament from the Imprimerie Royale, founded by Louis XIII in 1640. It is a substantial reprint, with a few alterations, of the New Testament printed by the Elzevirs in 1624, adding a 30-page appendix of Variae Lectiones. The text was set in Garamond's Greek types from the mid-sixteenth century, used by the Estienne dynasty of printers, which subsequently became part of the equipment of the Imprimerie Royale. The publication is enriched by a fine engraved title-pageOld gilt-stamped calf with faded gilt. All edges gilt. Rebacked with modern brown buckram spine cover, label in black morocco gilt; covers scuffed, corners worn. Internally very clean with leaves lined in red. According to the owner's note on the 3rd blank- Dibdin states [Vol I, p137], : "This magnificent edition which was compliled at the solicitation of Cardinal Mazarinis (Giulio Mazarini, cardinal) , formed on those of R Stephens but more particularly on the third of 1550: he has, however, more particularly omitted the introductory part of that and the various readings. ... It is a work which along with Juveanal, Horace and Virgil from the same prefs[? ] ranks among the most splendid." Large paper with wide margins. One of the earliest productions of the recently founded royal printers under the directorship of SAbastien Cramoisy. Darlow & Moule 4687. .
