Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Red coloured cloth covered boards with green coloured embossed illustration to the front panel and green coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with pale apricot and black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Set in Normandy, and of a woman who needs to find a scapegoat /s for all of the evil that is within her (think Picture of Dorian Gray). Softening of the back strip edges with fading of the lower edge. Rubbing of the book corners and lower book edges. Age toning of the text block edges and pages with a pink stain to page 143. Very light offset tanning to the endpages along with a few stains. Chipping of the dustwrapper corners and back strip edges. A little creasing of the edges with chipping to the front dustwrapper edges. Rubbing of the panels, fold over creases and either side of the back strip. Fading to the back strip with yellowing and handling marks to the rear panel. Some creases to the front fold over panel. This is the first USA edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
