About This Item

London England: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1976. Hardback. First Edition. Gunpowder, Treason and Plot. Slight foxing to end inside covers. Crease to corner back cover of D/J. Couple of tears to top edge of back D/J. The author's interest in the Gunpowder Plot derives from the fact that he and Guy Fawkes attended the same school - St. peter's, one of the oldest schools in England, the royal and cathedral school of York. Earlier histories have tended to adopt one of two opposite points of view. Protestants have accepted the official story. agreeing the militant catholics planned to murder the King in Parliament. Some catholic apologists, one of the other hand, have denied the reality of the plot or questioned, at least, whether its existence has ever been proved. They have pointed to contradiction in the evidence and cast doubts on the value of testimony extracted by torture. Some scholars have suggested that the plot was devised by the Earl of Salisbury and certain it is that no conspiracy could have better swerved his purpose. Agreeing wholly with neither side, the author of this book belieces that the original plot was real enough but doomed to technical failure. Salisbury then substituted a different scheme, feasible in itself but watched from the outset by his secret service. This compelling story, which the author presents with absorbing and enlightening detail, serves to remind us of the bomb scares of an earlier age. Illustrated. 139 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Hardback.
