New York: Harper and Row, 1978. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Complete three-volume set, all first editions, first printings, published consecutively in 1974, 1975 and 1978. All are stated First Editions with full number lines ending in "1" and no book-club blind-stamps on the rear boards. Two jackets have the publisher's original price printed on the front flaps, $12.50 and $16.50, and the Vol. 2 dust jacket is price-clipped. Black cloth bindings with gold lettering on the spines. Large and heavy books. Illustrated with photos. Silver, black and gold dust jackets. VERY GOOD to NEAR FINE books in VERY GOOD + dust jackets. All books are tightly bound, straight and square. Vol. 1 has waviness to the cloth on the spine, a small light pencil mark on the outer fore edge, and a previous owner signature in erasable pencil on the front pastedown. Vol. 2 has coffee stains on the outer fore edge, which has penetrated slightly to the outer margin of a few text pages, bumped bottom corners, and some faint staining on the front and rear boards. Vol. 3 has age-toning along the outer edges of the text block and previous owner's apparent three initials lightly rubber-stamped on the bottom edge and is otherwise nearly Fine. No other writing or markings in any of the books and all pages appear possibly unread. Dust jackets are all bright and very clean. Vol. 1 has some slight wear at the spine ends and top corners with a small closed tear at the top rear corner and vertical creasing along the outer edge of the rear flap. Vol. 2 has light wear at the bottom spine end, including two small closed tears, and a tiny hole in the center of the rear spine fold. Vol. 3 has a 3/4" closed tear at the top edge of the front panel and a 1/2" closed tear along with a tiny triangular chip at the top rear corner and slight sun-fading on the spine. Jackets are all protected in archival mylar covers..

The three-volume book is a massive narrative relying on eyewitness testimony and primary research material, as well as the author's own experiences as a prisoner in a Gulag labor camp.
