Illustrated historical account of the origin and development of forestry in Queensland from the founding of the Queensland Forestry Department in 1900. During World War I the department recognised that future needs for timber would not be met by native forests and experimental work was accordingly started on growing plantations. Most timber now produced in Queensland comes from these plantations. Techniques had to be developed by trial and error. They are now very sophisticated and spread across many disciplines. Despite their early concerns for conservation, however, Queensland foresters came under attack from modern conservationists and this led to the end of logging on Fraser Island and in the State's rainforests. This is a book that will appeal greatly to the general reader as well as those more familiar with the history of forestry in Australia. Weight: 735g.
