About This Item

UK,slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,illustrated,1st edn. FINE+/FINE-. Owner's small written name to top edge of fore-edge corner of half-title page and a price-clip to dw/dj. Bright, crisp,clean,glossy,wrap-around,speckled light brown background with colour pictorial artwork by Pauline Ellison, illustrated dw/dj front and rear panels; front of dw/dj with Hansel & Gretel's gingerbread house illustration wih capitalised,white-lettered title, illustrator's name and credit and ADAMS's name and credit for selection and introduction.Spine/backstrip with capitalised, white lettered title and capitalised, black-lettered illustrator+ ADAMS's names and publisher's capitalised,black-lettered initialled name to foot of same, rear panel of dw/dj with small colour pictorial illustration centrally. Negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners – no major nicks, tears or splits present, but miniscule laminate curl and crease at head of spine and the front panel lightly sunned/faded across its top half.Top edges with merest, faintest hint of blemish else, but along with fore-edges,still bright, crisp and clean without foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound – virtually pristine with no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips – appears unread, apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp and clean/unblemished,sharp-cornered,original plain dark green cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt capitalised lettered spine/backstrip,a gold headband and immaculate plain dark grey endpapers.UK,slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,illustrated,1st edn,5-128pp [paginated] includes b/w thumbnail illustrated Contents list/table, Richard Adams's Introduction,19 tales each with 19 full page, full colour illustration and b/w line illustrated chapter headpiece - all by Pauline Ellison throughout the text and the book; plus [unpaginated] half-title page and a b/w thumbnail illustrated title page. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable and particularly internally,is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 40+ year-old age and nature, i.e a children's book.It is only the minimal faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading. Despite those,it really is still an exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of major detracting faults associated with children's ownership of such books. In this delightful collection, brave heroes and heroines like Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood battle with witches and wolves, while the Goose Girl and Rapunzel show that goodness can triumph over evil. Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Snow White are among the jewels we owe to the German brothers Grimm, who began in the first decade of the 19th century to seek out and listen to village storytellers. The best-loved of the tales they discovered are now brought together with the marvellous detailed pictures by illustrator Pauline Ellison. Pauline Ellison, painter and illustrator, was born in Keighley and educated at Keighley Grammar School. She then studied at Bradford Art School, going on to colleges of art at Leicester and Cambridge, the latter with its prestigious illustration courses. She moved to London in 1967 and began a freelance career as a commercial illustrator. Her commissions include work for The Times Saturday Review, Radio Times, Harpers, Good Housekeeping, Nova, The Observer and The Sunday Times. Her book illustrations for Grimm's Fairy Tales this particular edition, are particularly striking. She has a particular fondness for commissions involving plants and animals. Her other book illustrations include: 'The Dark Lord of Pegersick.' (1976) by Richard Carlyon, 'A Love of Flowers.' (1971) in collaboration with, and by H.E. Bates, the 'Earthsea Trilogy.'(1975) by Ursula K. Le Guin, 'Master Maid.' (1997) retold by Aaron Shepard.
