Founded in 1984 by Wild at Heart author Gifford, Black Lizard Press reprinted over 90 mid-century crime fiction titles during its existence, reviving interest in some of the grittier but neglected writers like Thompson. 'The French seem to appreciate best Thompson's brand of terror,' writes Gifford. '[He] fulfills the French notion of both noir and maudit, the accursed and self-destructive.' Cover illustrator Jim Kirwan, who like Thompson is a native Oklahoman, mocked up his moody concept art after being given only three lines from each Black Lizard title he was assigned. 188 pp.
