About This Item
London: Methuen & Co., 1969. Revised or 2nd ed.. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, good condition (in fair only dustjacket), edges & pages lightly toned, endpapers little foxed & toned, small mark front board, reverse side jacket lightly toned & foxed (some edgewear, slight loss bottom & top edges near spine, closed edge tears, spine ends scuffed, flaps creased). 308 pp. The author divides his analysis of the Greek State into two parts. The first is a study of the Greek city-state, the polis, which was the first community of free citizens ever created, and the first bound to the nomos, the law. The first part ends with a survey of Greek attempts at federation. In the second part, the Hellenistic State is reviewed, the first territorial monarchy formed on a Western as well as an Eastern basis. Originally published in 1960. This new edition has been considerably revised and extended, and the author has added a chapter in conclusion on the state and civilization in Hellenic and Hellenistic times.
