About This Item
New York: Haskell House Publishers, 1971. New ed.. Hardback octavo, no jacket, good condition, dark green cloth boards, faint foxing edges, top corner front cover bumped, spine ends rubbed, cover corner tips slightly rubbed, fore-edge rear cover slightly marked, owner's name & details front free flyleaf. 212 pp. New edition. A fascinating look at the Oligarchic Constitutions in Ancient Greece. There is little literature about Ancient Greek oligarchs. In the first chapter he examines the place occupied by oligarchy and aristocracy in the Greek classification of constitutions. In the second and third chapters he briefly discusses the causes of constitutions, in order to show the place occupied by oligarchy in this process. Two appendices deal with some problems of early Athenian history. In the fourth chapter the varieties of oligarchy are discussed, and the last chapter is devoted to the organisation of oligarchic government. It is followed by an appendix on the revolution of the Four Hundred at Athens. (Originally published, 1896.).
