Very good. 8vo, pp. xxvi, 305, "with 164 photographic illustrations by the author, 11 by Captain Scott and others, a map & two drawings, and an Introduction by Lady Scott." Publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine and upper board. Spine somewhat dulled, with short tears to the cloth at head and foot; light rubbing to corners. Binding sound, text and endpapers unmarked. No dust jacket. Rosove 251.A3: "Ponting was the first professional photographer to accompany an Antarctic expedition, and the difference showed in the brilliance of his work.... Strong points in the narrative...include the descriptions of the gale at sea during the southward advance, wildlife in the pack ice, life aboard ship and the personalities of the ship's officers, Ponting's experience at Cape Evans with the orcas, experiences behind the production of much of his photography and cinematography...and details of seal and penguin life.
