About This Item
Grosset & Dunlap, New York: (1970)., 1970 248p. Profusely illustrated. XLib. Folio. Original full cloth binding. Original dust jacket. "Here, with lavish illustrations and in loving detail, is the story of American Folk Medicine from the end of the Civil War until 1906, when Congress, by passing the Pure Food and Drug Act, put an end forever to some of the nation's more bizarre nostrums. It was a time of Indian Snake Root Oil and Electric Belts, of tonics and phosphates, of pills, powders, and elixirs, of herb teas and aphrodisiacs. It was a wild, robust, free-wheeling epoch, when much that was put forward could only be described as far-fetched. In addition to the home remedies there were the countless thousands of patent medicines. To sell them, the manufacturers made any claims they could think of, and hired top-notch illustrators to embellish those claims. and a revolution took place in the field of graphic arts. Many of the steel engravings and color reproductions required so much exacting hand labor that they cannot be duplicated today, and as a result are now much sought after as collectors' items. And it's all here in this volume." MED 3 Language: eng. Hardcover. Good/Dust Jacket Included.
