About This Item

UK & USA: Paladin/Granada, 1975 These books were purchased new and have been in storage for decades. However the cover has light shelf wear and the edges of the book are somewhat tanned. From the cover notes of 1975: The show's been going on now for nearly eighty years. There have been heady days of naive success and dismal waves of cringingly poor films, and despite its superficial emulation of all things Hollywood, the British cinema has until recently been insular and nationalistic. The entire ehtos of the British cinema - the things which stir us, excite us and make us laugh - is examined in this enormously thorough and affectionate book. George Perry discusses every major British film, and the people who made them. He shows how the British cinema has transcended blandness and trivia, parasites and charlatans, continuing crises and slumps to prouce a fine tradition of satire and documentary, comedy and drama. He places it is its political and social context, examining particularly the British obsession with class that has so often pervaded the industry. All the major writers, directors, actors and producers of the British film industry are listed in a comprehensive checklist at the end of the book. At the time of publication the author was assistant editor of the Sunday Times Magazine. 367 pages. Several copies may be available. Books listed here are not stored at the shop.
