About This Item

London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1900. Doyle's report on the South African war eventually went to sixteen editions by 1902, when it ended. This is a Very Good copy of the First Printing of the First Edition. Dark blue ribbed cloth binding, ruled; with titling and ruling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 552 pages; Appendix and fold-out map; with a 12-page (unopened) publisher's catalog in the rear. Mild bumping, tips a bit rubbed. Some small tears to the head and foot of the spine; faint crease on front cover; spine is faded to a dark brown but the gilt remains nicely bright as day. Both gutters have cracking; they are holding but should be reinforced. This is a much better copy than the list of faults would indicate, and it presents very well. In an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Minus)/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
