About This Item

Nonesuch Press, 1929, narrow 8vo, pp. (3) 189 (2); decorated cloth. English, very handsome edition of the semi-autobiographical novel (set in Italy) of Alphonse de Lamartine, France's first romantic poet, which had first appeared in 1849, in "Confidences". - A book designed by Francis Meynell; 1600 numbered copies were printed, all on Arches paper. Eleven of the 30 illustrations were coloured through stencils at the Curwen Press. Ivy Jacquier (or Mrs. Ivy Skinner, 1890 - ?), was a French born painter and book illustrator. For the Nonesuch Press she also illustrated James Thomson's "The Seasons" (1927). - Tape residue marks in the corners of the end-papers (see 2nd picture), but otherwise an excellent copy. - Dreyfus 57. - [Extra shipping cost will be charged for destinations out with Europe].
