London: Macmillan & Co Ltd, 1940. First edition, 1940. Signed by John Farleigh to half title page and dated 12 Sept. 44. Hardback. 388pp. Illustrated boards. No dust jacket. John Farleigh, painter, illustrator and engraver, is probably best known for his illustrations to George Bernard Shaw's "Black Girl in Search of God". He also illustrated some of the works of D. H. Lawrence and Sacahverell Sitwell. He was a member of the Wood Engraving Society and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society and was, at one time, Art Instructor at Rugby School and then Instructor at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, Bloomsbury. This is both an autobiography and a discourse on some aspects of the engraver's technique. The book is well illustrated and of particular interest are the reproductions of wood engravings in various states. Book in good condition. Boards generally a little soiled and rubbed. Corners mildly bumped. Spine a little discoloured. Small printed sticker with previous owner's name & address to lower corner of front paste down. Also a different previous owner's ink signature to ffep and again to title page. Free end papers a little toned. Internally very clean and virtually free of spotting.
