About This Item

Paris, Émile-Paul frères, (September) 1913.

1 vol. (115 x 185 mm) with 366 p. and 1 f. Doubled ivory morocco, ribbed spine, gilt title, date at foot, double gilt fillet on edges, gilt edges on leaves, moiré endpapers, covers and spine preserved, cigar case (binding signed by Huser).

First edition.
Copy of first issue (text and cover).

One of 1000 copies on satin-finish vellum (no. 555), the only paper after the 10 copies on green paper (Japons and Hollandes were printed later).

First issue copy with dates of September for the printing of the text "15822-9-13" p. 366 and of October for the cover "15824-10-13", and with the mention on the back of the price 3F.50.

Numbered copy no. 555 at the compositor, part of an edition of 1,000 copies of the current print run on cream satin-finish vellum.

A precious copy, enriched by an important letter from Alain-Fournier, written a few months before the publication of Le Grand Meaulnes, in the spring of 1913: "L'Opinion, [. ...], found, I believe, very sincerely, my book good [...] but it did not appear Jeune France enough, "roman de l'Opinion" enough, "enquête d'Agathon" enough [...] I only regret one thing, that this adventure delayed the publication of this long-finished book. From now on, I shall resist all attempts at seduction. And it will be published in July either by NRF or Grande Revue (my choice), and in October, in volume, either by NRF or Émile-Paul (my choice)."

Headed by a typed copy of Émile-Paul's reply to Raoul Simonson, who had asked about the print run, indicating that six copies had been printed on green paper, not 10 (sale of 28-11-1990, no. 103). In the Gaffé copy was another letter to Georges Le Cardonnel, dated June 24, 1913, in which Alain-Fournier announced the publication of Le Grand Meaulnes in the Nouvelle Revue française. Le Cardonnel was a member of the editorial staff of Paris-Journal, where a sincere friendship developed between him and Alain-Fournier.Finally, it should be noted that this copy appeared in the exhibition "Reflets de la Bibliophilie en Belgique" (Brussels, Bibliothèque Royale, 1969) under no. 103.

According to the publisher, 1010 copies were printed (1000 on standard paper + 10 on paper). (1000 on current paper + 10 on "green paper intended for the author") in September 1913, with an additional 30 copies (10 japon and 20 hollande) in February 1914 (letter cited in Deprechins' study in Le Livre et l'Estampe, 1970, n°63-4, pp. 177-8).

Provenance: Bibliothèque Egide Bouchez (bookplate); Jean E. Leclerq (bookplate).

Provenance : Bibliothèque Egide Bouchez (ex-libris) ; Jean E. Leclerq (ex-libris).

Synopsis

Le Grand Meaulnes is the only novel by French author Alain-Fournier. Fifteen-year-old François Seurel narrates the story of his relationship with seventeen-year-old Augustin Meaulnes as Meaulnes searches for his lost love. Impulsive, reckless and heroic, Meaulnes embodies the romantic ideal, the search for the unobtainable, and the mysterious world between childhood and adulthood. It is considered one of the great works of French literature.
