Garden City: Doubleday Doran, 1932. First American Edition. Signed and inscribed by Vicki Baum to Sam Marx, fabled head of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio story department, in the printed half title: “To Sam Marx, with love and all best wishes! Vicki Baum, 1931 Hollywood”. Very good in very good plus dust jacket. Laid in is printed image, from Sam Marx’s biography he later wrote on Irving Thalberg and Louis B. Mayer, which shows Marx and Vicki Baum on the lobby set for Grand Hotel. Baum was one of the first bestseller authors, and her novel Grand Hotel was an international publishing sensation. The film version is the first true all-star Hollywood film with MGM putting their top stars into the production starring Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore, and Wallace Beery. The film which remains highly enjoyable today and was the Oscar winner for Best Picture in 1932.
