About This Item

Oxford University Press, London, 1968 facsimile of the 1749 first edition. Cloth, 8vo, 20 cm,. vii, 375 pp. A facsimile reproduction of the first edition of 1749; with an introduction and bibliography by Jill E. Grey. "The Governess" was a popular eighteenth-century tale about the adventures and misadventures of Mrs. Teachum and her nine pupils. "Sarah Fielding's The Governess well deserves a place in the annals of children's literature. It is the earliest known full-length novel written for children, and as such, the first moral tale, the first school story, and the first educational novel. First published in 1749 and still to be found in print in 1903, it can also justly claim to be one of the longest-lived stories for children. The facsimile reproduction included in this volume is of the first edition in the possession of Mrs. Jill B. Grey who has written an Introduction and prepared the bibliographical account of The Governess as a children's book." - from the blurb. bookplate on front pastedown endpaper, otherwise Very Good in price-clipped dustwrapper.
