About This Item
New York: United Press Photos, 1958. Single Photograph. Fine. 7 x 9 Inches. Original b/w News Service photograph of the Goodyear Inflatoplane; an inflatable, experimental aircraft made for the Office of Naval Research by the Goodyear Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Photo shows the aircraft in flight over the Akron, Ohio test area. A total of 12 prototypes were built between 1956 and 1959, and testing continued until 1972, when the project was finally cancelled. Goodyear donated two Inflatoplanes; one to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, and one to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Typewritten caption attached to the back of the photo. Photo with corner pinholes otherwise fine.
