This biography of Barrymore was written in an era where private lives of celebrities were not seen as tabloid fodder and in which an author could concentrate on the important aspects of an artist's journey rather than scandal and sensationalism. Fowler met John Barrymore in 1918, when he working as a reporter for "The New York American" and Barrymore was acting in Redemption and remained a close friend up to his death in 1942 of alcoholism. From the 1920s through the 1940s, Fowler was one of the most famous journalists in America. Gene Fowler paints a portrait of Barrymore not as a wild, womanizing alcoholic who just happened to be an actor, but as an artist of real talent and significance whose life was by turns sad, funny, and tragic. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
