About This Item

London: Constable & Company Ltd,, 1939. First edition, first impression, second issue binding without endpapers, of the fourth and final interwar work by Rhys, set in Paris. The experimental modernist novel was critically well-received, but initial sales were poor and Rhys spent a decade after the novel's publication living in obscurity. In 1949 a theatrical adaptation of the novel was created, for which she was tracked down via newspaper advertisements to obtain her permission. Rhys credited this renewed interest in her for a second burst of literary output, and in 1966 published her final novel, Wide Sargasso Sea. Octavo. Original green metallic cloth, titles to spine in purple. With dust jacket. A very good copy, boards slightly bowed, contents clean, in like price-clipped dust jacket, spine panel toned, extremities a little rubbed and nicked, else bright.

Synopsis

Good Morning, Midnight, published in 1939, deals with a protagonist that has returned to Paris but cannot seem to escape the desperation in her life and chases the loneliness and depression with alcohol and sleeping pills, adrift in the city of love. The title takes its name from Good Morning -- Midnight, a poem by Emily Dickinson which is quoted throughout the story. -
