Gone Gougin’ is the fourth book in the Weird Mob series by Nino Culotta (aka John O’Grady) and is set some twenty years after They’re a Weird Mob. While things are quiet in the building trade, Nino and his mates, Joe and Dennis head north-west to Lightning Ridge to look for opals. The initial chapters concentrate on word play with place names and the usual stirring that Aussie blokes indulge in with one another. It is easy to see that these books are written before the days responsible drinking and the breathalyser were heard of, as the mates stop at many pubs on their road trip. Dennis quotes plenty of Hamlet and Joe enlightens with Aussie slang expressions. Culotta manages to include quite a bit of information about opal mining as well as offering opinions on liquor licensing laws, the treatment of aborigines, long haired men, cafes and mateship. There are quite a few practical jokes and some humorous illustrations by Benier. This book is not as funny as the first book of the series, but is still an enjoyable read.
