The pictures have been chosen by Colin Garratt from the collection of the late Rev. A.W.V. Mace and grouped into. sections of the big . four companies; L.M.S., G.W.R.; S.R. and L.N.E.R. These companies operated from 1923 until the formation of British Railways in 1948.' This twenty five year period was the high summer of steam railway operation when the most technically advanced designs worked in contrast with a plethora of ancient types dating back to the:-individual designs of the oseparate companies of pre 1923. Arthur Mace- travelled widely across Britain capturing the vibrant spirit of this exciting period.
