About This Item

London: C. Kegan Paul & Co., 1878. Burton's first gold-seeking expedition was a financial disappointment, and he ultimately failed in his attempts to enlist the Khediv of Egypt as his sponsor. But his typical keen (and opinionated) observations are always worthwhile. His note to the reader allows that he considers this book to be a "sequel and continution" of his "Pilgrimage to El-Madinah and Meccah." This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition [Penzer, pp. 95-96; Casada #38] in a contemporary rebind. Red cloth boards with tipa and spine in red leather. Clean text; xvi, 392 pages; top-edge is gilt; with a fold-out map of North-western Arabia and Appendices. [There is a Preface by Isabel Burton, who produced the book while Richard was still traipsing around. Casada notes that a new edition in 1979 corrected her mistakes - some 1600!] While the textblock is freesh and bright, the front cover is detached and the rear cover is tender, The top layer of the spine has been abraided away. Please note the condition issues. Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of repair or restoration.. First Edition. Disbound. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
