About This Item

Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Sydney, Angus & Robertson, 1933 [first edition]. Octavo, x, 285, [1] (colophon), 26 (publisher's catalogue) pages with an illustration plus 35 plates, 2 maps on the front endpaper, a statement of limitation printed on the verso of the front flyleaf, and the pictorial front panel of the dustwrapper bound in after the half-title (as issued). Publisher's blind-ruled brown textured cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; cloth lightly marked, with the publishing date in white ink near the foot of the spine (but read on); front endpaper discoloured by a contemporary newspaper review cutting (still present); an excellent copy (internally fine). The statement of limitation indicates this is 'One of 200 copies in art [artificial] leather, with jacket bound in. This is No. 44', numbered and signed by the author. The book is based on the life of Cecil John Levien (1874-1932), district officer and mining promoter (see the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'). The review, by 'The Bodleian', is identified in pencil as coming from the 'Mail', 22 April 1933; a desultory search on Trove didn't locate it. Provenance: the Glover copy, with the armorial bookplate of Charles R.J. Glover mounted on the verso of the front flyleaf, below the author's signature; the date in white ink on the spine is endemic to the books in the Glover collection (whatever possessed the man?).
