About This Item
The Jacaranda Press, Milton, Brisbane, 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic. 900 g; VIII, 152 pages, indexed. Apart from the 8 pages central photographic section in colour, the rest of the book is profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs, and some reproductions of documents and maps. Colour illustrated dustwrapper. The only damage to the book is a trace of foxing to the top edge of the text block. The book is a popular history of study of the Gold Coast, from the early 19th century, when John Oxley set out to find the mouth of a large river that flowed into Moreton Bay, to the present day. The discussion of the early days is a chronological exposition of the exploration and the 1st settlements on the coast. This account of the period of the 1920s is a fascinating story of the gradual growth of commercial centres, ports and communications in an area. The 2nd chapter discusses the vegetation that was native to the coastal strip and the different eco-systems throughout the strip and the adjoining hinterland. -- Front fold over blurb Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall.
