Westerham, Kent: Privately Printed at The Westerham Press, 1961 Soft cover, 4to, in "chinesisches Papier" gold-flecked paper wraps over stiff card, hand printed in red and black upon grey Arnold & Foster paper, 20 pp., First Edition limited to 500 unnumbered copies. Frontispiece illustration. In German and English. Colophon states this publication was made to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Maximilian Society in England, given by its English members. (Feier des fünfzigjährigen Bestehens der Maximilian-Gesellschaft im Oktober 1961 von den in England lebendend Mitgliedern gestiftet.) Selections from the foundational thinker and father of Romanticism, author, poet and artist's written English of different periods is given, including a number of letters to his sister Cornelia, from the 1760's. He was multi-lingual, and is quoted in Freidenthal's introduction that he did not care for formal instruction in English grammar!**CONDITION: Near Fine, bright, clean and with some very minor wear along the folded edge of the wraps, one faint watermark to ffep. fore edge. Now in mylar. ** Author Richard Friedenthal (b. 1896) was a Goethe scholar and biographer writing what has been called the definitive biography of of the German polymath of his generation entitled, (in English) "Goethe, his Life and Times" (1966.)**Book designer and typographer Hans Schmoller (1949-76) was a highly influential German-English book designer for Penguin in the third-quarter of the twentieth century. .
