About This Item
London: Hamish Hamilton, 1953. A first edition, first printing published by Hamish Hamilton in 1953. A near fine book without inscriptions - a superb copy with a full, rich red topstain. In a very good complete wrapper which is clipped and has two tape repairs internally, the top, bleeding a little through. SIGNED on the front flap by Val Biro, the illustrator of the fantastic dust wrapper. The story is a poignant coming-of-age story set in Edwardian England. The novel's narrator, Leo Colston, looks back on a summer spent at a grand estate called Brandham Hall. He becomes the unwitting messenger in a passionate love affair between the daughter of the house, Marian, and a local farmer, Ted. Leo's innocence and the consequences of his actions haunt him throughout his life, reflecting themes of class, love, and the passage of time.
