The vessel caught fire and the crew/passengers were evacuated into 3 boats - one of which traveld 4000 miles to the Hawaiian islands. There, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) was touring the islands interviewing the surviors of the accident and this story was the 1st article published that gained him a readership as a journalist..

All are plain, with bright gilt printing on the side panels. Each book is 6" x 8".

Red marbled end sheets and paste downs are clean and bright. Title page and index page have multiple creases and tears but the print is readable. Contents are in very good condition. Thumbed index tabs. Page edges have a lot of dust. All reference pages are clean and not marked
