HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents GLUCK & THE OPERA, a reissue of the ERNEST NEWMAN book published in 1895 by Bertram Dobell. Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians described Ernest Newman as "the most celebrated British music critic in the first half of the 20th century." This book studies in detail Christoph Willibald von Gluck, one of just a few 18th Century musical geniuses who created the opera genre. 5 1/4" x 8", 300 pages including index, with ORIGINAL PRICE CLIPPED DUST JACKET encased in mylar. Overall condition of the book is VERY GOOD PLUS. Pages (all edges tinted) = Very Good Plus: tint on edges has worn off, first and last fep's as well as pages 6 and 7 have stain from mylar jacket protector, non author dedication plus owner sticker on first fep, else clear, tight, sharp, no additional marks. Cover (blue cloth boards with gold gilt particulars on spine only) = Very Good Plus: bottom of all have stains from mylar jacket protector, front and back bent slightly open, else tight, sharp, colorful, clear, shows little rubbing, square. ORIGINAL (mylar encased) DUST JACKET (cream paper with silver grey designs, particulars in red and silver grey) = VERY GOOD PLUS: a number of ripples from being forced into mylar, glue stains from remains of attached black plastic protector edges, else whole, clear, colorful, little edge deterioration.
