About This Item
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1859. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good +. 4 7/8 X 7 1/2 Inches. 122 PP. Important description of AMERICAN BASEBALL, which Elwyn called "Bat and Ball" in his youth. Interestingly, he describes the game as "an imperfect form of cricket," but also clearly states that it was "a Yankee Invention."<br /> <br /> Alfred Elwyn was a physician, author, philanthropist and pioneer in the care of the mentally ill in the United States. He was a founding officer of the Pennsylvania Institution for the Blind. This book was intended to show the reader that the vast majority of his included "Americanisms" found their origin elsewhere. Original embossed cloth binding with gilt title-stamping to spine. Spine a bit sunned. A hint of foxing. Book clean, tight and free of any writing, plates, etc... An exceptional copy considering how one normally encounters this often used and often quoted book.
