Luigi Palma di Cesnola (1832-1904), a veteran of the American Civil War, and before that the Austrian and Crimean Wars, was an amateur archaeologist, who excavated in Cyprus, digging up many antiquities that became a core of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where Palma di Cesnola was appointed its first director in 1879.. 1st.
